Science
We understand that all children are scientists and have a natural curiosity about the world around them. We use The Primary Science Scheme of Work to inform our science curriculum. The scheme supports us it planning progressive, sequential lessons and units whilst allowing us the freedom to adapt each lesson to the needs of each current cohort. We ensure that fundamental scientific knowledge is interwoven with supporting children to work scientifically. We use the scheme’s ‘Big Ideas’ to create and seize regular knowledge retention opportunities within this subject as we know this is how children retain best.
Our Science curriculum aims to develop the natural, healthy curiosity in children about the universe, encouraging respect for the living and non-living and to provide opportunities for critical evaluation of evidence. Teachers encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at Cranbrook Primary School and beyond. Through the programmes of study, children will acquire and build upon their key knowledge, in addition to the application of scientific skills. Working Scientifically skills are built-on and developed, which enables children to gain confidence in planning and conducting investigations, and explaining concepts accurately. Children become more independent in their selection and use of scientific equipment, and interpretation of results, including cross curricular links with Maths and IT.
Children are happy to take risks in their Science lessons, by poising questions, making predictions and suggesting ideas and theories. Children particularly enjoy engaging in a range of hands on investigations and exploring outside of the classroom. The Science curriculum is enriched with visits to the local Science Centre, providing children with new experiences, and links to local schools enabling children to experience Science in a laboratory. Science Week focuses on a theme enabling children to become immersed in one area and participate in a range of activities. Science workshops and visits from local engineers, have also brought Science to life within the school, and formed links with the wider community.
